Great Florida Birding Trail The Great Florida Birding Trail (GFBT) is a 2,000-mile self-guided trail linking hundreds of Florida birdwatching destinations. Of the more than 440 sites listed on the Great Florida Birding Trail, four are located in Walton County in Northwest Florida. These include two state parks, a state forest and a municipal park. A number of the 500-plus bird species reported in Florida may be spotted on the Great Florida Birding Trail destinations in Walton County. Among the species seen in Walton County are Cooper's Hawks, Common Yellowthroats, Hooded Warblers, Brown-headed Nuthatches, Pied-billed Grebes, plovers and terns. The Great Florida Birding Trail is divided into four sections: East Florida, West Florida, South Florida and the Florida Panhandle, which lays claim to 78 sites in 16 counties. A free guide to each section of the Great Florida Birding Trail is available online, by mail or at selected GFBT locations. The Great Florida Birding Trail was created by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and modeled after the successful Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.
